Out of seven Iranian football players granted humanitarian visas by Australia, only two have chosen to remain in the country.
Human rights activists suggest that the remaining players feared potential repercussions from the Iranian government if they stayed. However, the semi-official Mehr news agency has characterized their return as a "patriotic decision."
These footballers initially sought asylum due to concerns about facing consequences for their silence during the Iranian national anthem at the start of their Asian Cup match.
